Our Project overview

Muangkham Village at Luang Prabang

Organization Overview:

The Youth Expedition Project (YEP) was launched in February 2000 by then Deputy Prime Minister, Lee Hsien Loong. Since then, YEP has supported more than 17,800 youths and 800 expeditions to ASEAN, India and China for international Service-Learning projects.
Chaired by Mr Teo Ser Luck, Senior Parliamentary Secretary, Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports and Chairman, National Youth Council, the advisory panel includes representatives from educational institutions as well as those from the youth, public and corporate sectors. In line with YEP's interest to involve young working adults in the programme, corporate sector representatives have been roped in, such as Citigroup Asia Pacific, Singtel and MindChamps Holdings Pte Ltd.

YEP has been a key youth development programme of NYC that encourages volunteerism among youth between the age of 15 and 35 years old to embark on community Service-Learning projects. The objectives of YEP are to nurture confident youth volunteers, who are socially responsible and active citizens, who can identify needs and contribute to the community both at home and overseas.

Our project overview:
We are a group of enthusiastic young volunteers who took up this challenge to embark on a journey to Laos in December 2009 to help the villagers in Muangkham Village. Muangkham Village consists of 96 families, making up a total population of 520 people. Their livelihoods are mainly by farming and seaweed production. Due to geographical reasons, they are often neglected by local social welfare groups.

The main objective of our mission is simple: Bring happiness to them by improving the infra-structure of the school, nursery, bring gifts to the children and sharing our Singapore education system with their teachers. We hope that through the collaborative efforts of your company/ you and our team can make the impossible possible: Warming their hearts, and putting a smile on their faces.

Project details:

We are going to offer our help in the following ways:

1) Smoothen the concrete playground on the school so that the children have a safer environment to play in. From our last trip to the place, children often play barefooted on uneven grounds; hence their feet are all covered with numerous scars and wounds. We will also convert the playground into a court so that the children can play various ball games there.

2) Repair the two existing swings so that it is safer for the children to play with

3) Sharing of English Pedagogy with the Secondary school English Teachers

4) Drawing of wall murals to brighten up the baby nursery

5) Introduction of soft skills to the children. Example: Soccer, volleyball, hopscotch…

Summary:

The children are all waiting for a glimpse of hope to pull them out of the circle of poverty. What we have in abundance seems almost a dream to them. You can be that glimpse of hope that the children have been waiting for ages. We invite you and your company to join us in this meaningful project. Your monetary contribution, regardless of amount, will make a huge difference in the lives of these children.
